Screen Doors

Screen doors

Quotes for a screen door can be for a light flyscreen or for a door sold as a security door. Ask each business the same questions to see which door each price is for.

BusinessIts name, and who you spoke to.
01Is this a flyscreen door, or a security door?If they call it a security door, ask what makes it one.
02Will it be hinged, or sliding? It usually matches how the door behind it opens.
03Is it made to measure for my door frame?Ask who measures, and when.
04Which frame colour and mesh is the quote for?Ask for the names, so two quotes are for the same door.
05What lock comes with it?Ask whether it can be keyed to match your front door.
06Is fitting in the price?Or supply only, with fitting on top.
07How long from the measure to fitting?Write down the date they give.
08Can the mesh be replaced later if it tears? And whether they do that repair themselves.
09What warranty do you give on the frame, the mesh and the fitting, and for how long?Ask what it covers for each.
Ask each business the same questions and write the answers side by side. Printed, the sheet fills one page, with a column for each of three quotes. From screendoors.com.au, a concept page.

What changes the price

Ask which mesh each quote is for: plain insect mesh, a stronger woven mesh, or a metal sheet with holes in it. A quote that does not name the mesh cannot be compared with one that does.

A sliding door, a wide opening or a frame that is out of square can each add to the cost. Ask each business what they saw when they measured.

Before the measure

Decide which doors need a screen, and if you want the same look on each. Note your front door's lock brand if you would like one key for both.

Clear the area around each door so it can be opened fully and measured.

Where to check

  • ABN Lookup, Australian Business Register

Shows whether a business's ABN is active or cancelled, its business type and its GST status, and the Register says the public can use it to check a business before buying.
